In order to clarify the effect and mechanism of the rural e-commerce on the integrated urban-rural development at county level, this study takes the comprehensive demonstration policy of e-commerce into rural areas as a quasi-natural experiment, and the relationship between rural e-commerce and the integrated urban-rural development at county level is empirically analyzed by using the panel data of 1,898 counties in China and the multi-period double difference model in the period of 2000-2022. The results show that: 1) The rural e-commerce can promote the integrated urban-rural development at county level. The promotion effect will gradually increase over time, and is still significant after a series of robustness tests. 2) The results of the heterogeneity analysis show that the comprehensive demonstration policy of e-commerce into rural areas has better policy performance at the late stage of rapid development, especially in agricultural e-commerce areas, poor counties and central and western regions. 3) Mechanism analysis shows that the rural e-commerce mainly promotes the integrated urban-rural development at county level by expanding market scale, optimizing industrial structure and promoting the flow of urban and rural capital elements, and the promotion effect will also be regulated by the level of information and communication technology. This study provide empirical evidence and policy enlightenment for promoting the integrated urban-rural development at county level under the background of common prosperity.
