To clarify the mechanism of the rural financial agglomeration affecting agricultural carbon emission intensity, this study utilizes a panel data from 30 provincial-level administrative regions in China from 2005 to 2021(The data do not include those of Xizang, HongKong, Macao and Taiwan regions, the same below). The system GMM model, fixed effects model, and mediation effects model are comprehensively employed to investigate the impact of rural financial agglomeration on agricultural carbon emission intensity, its dynamic evolution and underlying mechanisms. The results show that: 1) The impact of rural financial agglomeration on agricultural carbon emission intensity exhibits an inverted U-shaped curve. After 2014, rural financial agglomeration shifted from promoting to inhibiting agricultural carbon emission intensity. 2) The inhibitory effect of rural financial agglomeration on agricultural carbon emission intensity is lagged. A one percentage point increase in rural financial agglomeration in the previous period reduces current agricultural carbon emission intensity by 1.558 percentage points. 3) In eastern and western regions, rural financial agglomeration shows an inverted U-shaped impact on agricultural carbon emission intensity, while in central and northeastern regions, the relationship is U-shaped. 4) Farmland transfer partially masks the promoting effect of rural financial agglomeration on agricultural carbon emission intensity, with the masking effect accounting for 34.6% of the total effect. Based on these findings, future policies should further advance rural financial service systems, develop region-specific financial strategies, improve farmland transfer markets, and fully leverage the carbon emission reduction potential of rural financial agglomeration.
