Impact effect analysis and mechanism exploration of farmers’ willingness to exit contracted land on their willingness to exit homesteads: Based on a moderated mediation effect test
This study aims to explore the influence of farmers’ willingness to exit contracted land on their willingness to exit homesteads and its mechanism. Based on the survey data of farmers in seven provinces across the country in 2022, the research employs an ordered Probit model and the moderated mediation model to empirically test the impact of farmers’ willingness to exit contracted land on their willingness to exit homesteads, and to analyze the mediating effect of the cognition of homestead functions and the moderating effect of livelihood capital. The results show that: 1) Farmers’ willingness to exit contracted land has significant positive influence on their willingness to exit homesteads; 2) The cognition of homestead functions plays a partial mediating role in the impact of farmers’ willingness to exit contracted land on their willingness to exit homesteads. The mediating effect of emotional function cognition is the strongest, followed by security function cognition, while asset function cognition exhibits the weakest effect. Meanwhile, livelihood capital moderates the influence of asset function cognition and emotional function cognition on homestead exit willingness; 3) The influence of contracted land exit willingness on homestead exit willingness is more pronounced in non-pilot areas of homestead system reform and western regions. Therefore, to effectively promote the coordinated exit of rural contracted land and homesteads, it is essential to explore the establishment of a synergistic mechanism for the exit of both contracted land and homesteads, and formulate differentiated exit policies for distinct farmer groups, and facilitate farmers’ transition to alternative livelihood models based on considering reasonable economic compensation and the preservation of emotional value.
