Abstract

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an idiopathic inflammatory bowel condition that affects the ileum, colon, and rectum. The pathogenesis of IBD involves multiple factors, primarily environmental influences, genetic predisposition, gut microbiota dysbiosis, and immune dysregulation. The interleukin(IL) ⁃ 17 family, a group of central effector cytokines of Th17 cell immune responses, plays a crucial role in host defense and inflammatory pathology, and is implicated in various immune ⁃ mediated inflammatory diseases. Recent studies have revealed that the IL ⁃ 17 family exerts more complex and significant functions in IBD. This review summarizes the research progress on the role of the IL⁃17 family in the development and progression of IBD and the potential as a therapeutic target, aiming to provide a basis for clinical decision⁃making.
