Objective The interactive evolution patterns between urban resilience and cultivated land use efficiency were investigated, and the coupling and coordination relationship, spatiotemporal characteristics and influencing factors in five cities in northern Jiangsu Province were analyzed in order to provide a scientific basis for promoting the coordinated development of urban resilience and cultivated land use efficiency. Methods The coupling coordination model, spatial analysis methods, and panel model were employed to study the spatiotemporal characteristics and driving factors of the coupling coordination degree between urban resilience and cultivated land use efficiency. Results ① In northern Jiangsu Province, urban resilience and cultivated land use efficiency generally exhibited an upward trend, but with significant spatial distribution differences. Urban resilience displayed a ‘high on both wings and low in the middle’ pattern, while cultivated land use efficiency showed a ‘low in the west and high in the east’ pattern. ② The coupling coordination degree between urban resilience and cultivated land use efficiency in northern Jiangsu Province showed a continuous upward trend and entered the intermediate coordination stage, presenting the spatial characteristics of ‘low in the west and high in the east, large contiguous areas, and small scattered patches’. ③ The per capita disposable income, irrigation index, per capita daily water consumption, population density, and proportion of social security and employment expenditure of rural residents were the main driving factors for the coupling coordination degree of urban resilience and cultivated land use efficiency in northern Jiangsu. Conclusion There is no inherent opposition or constraint between urban resilience and cultivated land use efficiency in northern Jiangsu Province. The coordinated development of the two should be achieved through the virtuous cycle of resource elements, rigid constraints in spatial planning, collaborative innovation in institutional policies, and deep empowerment through technological governance, as well as by formulating regionally differentiated development strategies and optimizing a multi-factor coordinated development policy system.
