Objective The changes in habitat quality and their driving factors in the aerial seeding forest area of Alxa Left Banner were analyzed in order to provide a scientific basis for the optimization of the ecological spatial pattern and the protection of the ecological environment of the study area. Methods Based on the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI), this study analyzed the evolution trend of ecological quality in the aerial seeding forest area of Alxa Left Banner from 2001 to 2024 using the Theil-Sen slope estimator, Hurst exponent, and Mann-Kendall test, and quantified the driving factors using geodetectors. Results ① In terms of temporal scale, the ecological quality in the study area was at a low level and showed a fluctuating downward trend. The average RSEI decreased from 0.054 7 to 0.041 2, with an overall decrease of 24.68%. In terms of spatial scale, poor ecological quality was mainly distributed in the southern region, while high ecological quality was found in the peripheral areas. ② The ecological quality in the study area was in a deteriorating state. The improvement areas and deterioration areas accounted for 11.28% and 88.72%, respectively. The improvement area showed a patch pattern, while the deterioration areas were mainly characterized by significant deterioration and were distributed over large areas. In the future, the ecological quality in the study area was projected to be dominated by strong persistent degradation and weak persistent improvement. ③ The detection results indicated that the explanatory power of land use types was the greatest, with a single-factor detection q value of 0.445 7, and the interaction detection q value with elevation was the largest at 0.559 0, indicating that the variations in ecological quality in this area were closely related to land use pattern. Conclusion The habitat quality of the aerial seeding forest in Alxa Left Banner is poor, with land use and elevation having the greatest influences.
