To study the influence of ballast gradation on the physical and mechanical properties of railway ballast aggregates, this paper proposes a quantitative method for gradation curves, converting gradation curve parameters into deterministic function expressions. Furthermore, a method combining discrete element simulation with grey system theory is used to analyze the influence of gradation on the performance of ballast aggregate; and a gradation evaluation method based on aggregate performance is proposed. The results show that the Logistic function accurately fits various gradation curves. Compared with the existing gradation parameters, the function provides higher determinacy. Six ballast samples with different gradations were compared using grey relational analysis. The result reveals that the ballast with smaller maximum particle size has better performance in porosity, axial stress, and transverse displacement. Reducing maximum nominal particle size while appropriately decreasing small-size particle proportion enhances ballast bed compactness, increases bearing capacity, and improves deformation resistance.
