A strain of aerobic denitrifying bacteria with efficient degradation characteristics of nitrate and nitrite nitrogen was selected from activated sludge of Beijing Xiaohongmen Sewage Treatment Plant. The strain was named Pseudomonas nitritireducens PHB18 through morphological analysis and 16S rRNA identification. The aerobic denitrification characteristics of strain PHB18 were investigated and the optimal conditions for its nitrogen removal were determined. The study showed that at an initial nitrogen concentration of 100 mg·L-1, the removal rates of -N were 92.54% with -N as the only nitrogen source, and the removal rates of -N were 99.28% with -N as the only nitrogen source. There was no significant accumulation of intermediates in either denitrification process. The single-factor optimization test showed that the strain PHB18 had the best aerobic denitrification performance under the conditions of C/N ratio of 14, pH range of 7.0~7.5, temperature of 30 ℃, and rotational speed of 120 rpm, and it could remove all nitrate nitrogen in 18 h.The Pseudomonas nitritireducens PHB18 provides a new source of bacteria for the enhanced biological nitrogen removal.
