To efficiently remove accumulated toxins in dialysate, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated with aspartic acid (Asp), glutamic acid (Glu), and phenylalanine (Phe) were prepared by coprecipitation method, and their adsorption performance for hippuric acid (HA) was investigated. The results showed that Phe-LDH exhibited the optimal performance with an adsorption capacity of 196.8 mg/g. Based on this, XG/Phe-LDH composite aerogel (XG/PL) was fabricated by freeze-drying method. The optimized composite aerogel exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 149 mg/g for HA, and the adsorption behavior followed the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating monolayer homogeneous chemisorption. Analysis confirmed that the interlayer ion exchange mechanism of Phe-LDH contributed to the efficient adsorption capacity of XG/PL.
