Research on the effect of the new rural social pension insurance on the utilization of medical services for the rural elderly from the perspective of intergenerational economic support
Objective To examine how the new rural social pension insurance (NRSPI) influences the utilization of medical services for rural elderly from the perspective of family intergenerational economic support, and to provide a decision-making basis for improving their health status. Methods Based on the data from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, the fuzzy regression discontinuity design was used to explore the effect of the NRSPI on the utilization of medical services for the rural elderly from the perspective of intergenerational economic support. Results Participation in the NRSPI significantly increased the utilization level of medical services for the rural elderly. The effect of NRSPI was greater on inpatient services utilization than on outpatient services utilization. There was a synergistic effect between the NRSPI and family intergenerational economic support in promoting the utilization of medical services for the rural elderly. The effect of the NRSPI varied among different rural elderly groups. Conclusion To improve the utilization level of medical services for the rural elderly, it is necessary to enhance the protection of NRSPI, strengthen health awareness and health literacy of the rural elderly, safeguard the function of family intergenerational economic support, and provide greater policy support to vulnerable elderly groups.
