Based on wind profile radar data and other observational data, the trigger mechanism and wind field characteristics of a hail event that occurred in the western mountainous areas of Chengdu on March 16, 2022, are analyzed. The results show that the intrusion of cold and dry air at upper levels and the presence of a dry line at mid-to-upper levels (dew-point front) are the primary triggers of this severe convective weather. The evolution of wind field characteristics can be effectively captured by wind profile radar. The diagnostic quantities derived from the wind field data have significant predictive value for this hailstorm. Notably, the peak times for vertical wind shear and low-level storm-relative helicity occur earlier than the onset of hail. Hailstorms typically occur when the low-level jet stream index reaches its maximum.
