Regional linkages between rural sports event IP and county-level economic growth: An exploration analysis based on county-level panel data from Qiandongnan Prefecture
To examine the relationship between rural sports event IP and county-level economic growth, and to analyze its effects on growth momentum and tourism development, this study uses county-level panel data from seven counties and county-level cities in Qiandongnan Prefecture from 2022 to 2024. A regional economic growth momentum index and a simplified event IP index are constructed, and panel regression models are employed for empirical analysis. The robustness of the results is further tested using different fixed-effects specifications and alternative dependent variables. The results show that: 1) Counties with rural sports event IP generally perform better in terms of growth momentum and tourism expansion. The simplified event IP index has a significantly positive effect in the pooled model and the year fixed-effects model. However, after simultaneously controlling county-specific fixed differences and common year shocks, the independent explanatory power of this variable for overall growth momentum weakens, suggesting that the economic effects of event IP are closely related to local culture-tourism foundations, industrial structure, and common year effects. 2) Rural sports event IP shows a clearer positive relationship with the growth rate of total tourism revenue, whereas its effects on tourism development intensity and the growth rate of rural residents’ income are more likely to be realized through indirect transmission and conditional mechanisms. Overall, based on short-panel evidence, this study reveals the possible pathways and conditions through which rural sports events may transform from “activity resources” into “development assets”, providing an empirical basis for future studies to expand county-level samples, improve communication-related variables, and conduct spatial identification.
