Objective This study aims to investigate the coupling coordination development level and interaction mechanisms between new-type urbanization and water security resilience in the Yangtze River economic belt, thereby providing scientific support for the synergistic advancement of resilient city construction and differentiated water security governance. Methods Taking the Yangtze River economic belt as the study area and the period from 2006 to 2023 as the study interval, comprehensive evaluation indicator systems for new-type urbanization and water security resilience were constructed. The spatiotemporal evolution characteristics, spatial correlation patterns, and driving mechanisms of their coupled and coordinated development were systematically analyzed using the game-theoretic combination weighting-TOPSIS method, coupling coordination degree model, Dagum Gini coefficient, exploratory spatial data analysis, and XGBoost-SHAP model. Results 1) The coupling coordination degree between new-type urbanization and water security resilience in the Yangtze River economic belt exhibited a steady increasing trend and spatial convergence, forming a gradient pattern of "downstream > midstream > upstream". 2) Its spatial correlation pattern shifted from agglomeration towards equilibrium, evolving into a synergistic network structure characterized by "core leadership, gradient transition, and low-value breakthrough" at the local scale. 3) The driving mechanisms showed nonlinear and interactive characteristics. Infrastructure and the urban-rural income gap were the core driving forces. Various factors exhibited widespread threshold effects and complex interactions, and this mechanism demonstrated significant heterogeneity across the river basin. Conclusion The Yangtze River economic belt should enhance the coupling coordination level between new-type urbanization and water security resilience by implementing differentiated governance strategies, promoting precise threshold regulation and spatial guidance, developing a multi-factor synergistic governance system, and improving dynamic monitoring and adaptive management mechanisms, thereby advancing high-quality development in the river basin.
