Abstract

The Wanli and Chongzhen megadroughts were extreme drought events that occurred during the weak monsoon period of the late Ming Dynasty, causing serious impacts on the natural and social environment at that time, and may even be important triggering factors for dynastic changes. Given the scarcity of comparative analyses on the spatial characteristics and intensity of the two megadroughts, this study integrates documentary-based dry-wet grade reconstructions,proxy-derived summer precipitation series,15 tree-ring and stalagmite δ18O records, and five climate-model outputs. To enhance the regional applicability and accuracy of the model data, downscaling and bias correction were performed. Based on these datasets, the spatial patterns and severity of the two megadroughts were comparatively analyzed. Literature data shows that both megadroughts were “north-south droughts”,with the North China region being drier. The proxy may indicate that the Wanli Megadrought was a “southern flood and northern drought”,and the Chongzhen Megadrought was a “north-south drought”. Anomaly outputs from the CESM-LME,MIROC-ES2L and MRI-ESM2-0 models identify northern China as a consistently drought-affected region during both megadroughts, using the 1601~1630 period as the baseline. Although data from different sources suggest that the two megadroughts may have different spatial characteristics, both indicate that North China is the region most severely affected by the two megadroughts. In the literature, there were more areas of severe drought in North China during the Chongzhen Megadrought period than during the Wanli Megadrought period. The drought signal in the proxy indicators for the Chongzhen Megadrought is more intense than that for the Wanli Megadrought. During the Chongzhen Megadrought, the May-September precipitation anomaly was 20~50 mm more negative. Therefore, the Chongzhen Megadrought was more severe than the Wanli Megadrought.

明末弱季风时期(the Late Ming Weak Monsoon Period,LMWMP,1580—1660 A.D.)(A.D.
