Based on the principle of destructive phase interference, a metasurface with a honeycomb checkerboard configuration is proposed for broadband radar cross-section (RCS) reduction in the X-band. The metasurface is composed of two different artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) unit cells arranged periodically and alternately. The designed AMC unit cells were maintained a reflection phase difference of 180°±37° within the frequency range of 7-12 GHz. Full-wave simulation results showed that the proposed metasurface achieves an RCS reduction of more than 15 dB in the 6-13 GHz band compared with a perfect electric conductor (PEC) reference surface of the same size. In addition, the RCS of both X- and Y-polarized incident waves across 5-13 GHz was significantly suppressed by the structure, with maximum reduction values of approximately 44 dB and 42 dB, respectively. Measured results obtained from the fabricated prototype are found to be in good agreement with the simulation trends, thus verifying the effectiveness of the proposed structure for broadband RCS reduction.
