Hedgerow systems have the potential to reduce runoff and soil loss. In order to explore the comprehensive effects of hedgerows on soil and water retention, nutrient interception and soil quality of slope farmland, this study took the Zigui Experimental Station of the Three Gorges Project ecological environment of Chinese Academy of Sciences as the research object, and set up a total of 10 experimental treatments in the runoff fields of navel orange orchard and slope farmland. The sediment yield as well as nitrogen and phosphorus loss under different planting patterns were compared and analyzed, and the soil quality differences among various experimental treatments were evaluated by using a comprehensive index of soil quality. The findings were as follows: 1) Hedges could effectively reduce the surface runoff and sediment yield of navel orange orchard and slope farmland, in which the average annual runoff in navel orange orchard could be reduced by 44.4%, with an average annual sediment yield reduction of 74.6%. In alfalfa fields the total runoff could be reduced by 50.8%, and the total sediment yield of Chinese toon (Toona sinensis) could be reduced by 32.7%. 2) Hedgerows demonstrated a significant interception effect on soil nutrients. Straw mulching and interplanting daylily hedgerows in navel orange orchard also exhibited a fairly strong interception effect, while in slope farmland only wheat-peanut interplanting alfalfa hedgerows could demonstrate a strong interception effect. 3) The comprehensive index of soil quality in all treatment groups of navel orange orchards was generally higher than that in the control group. However, the soil quality in all treatment groups of slope farmland was degraded to a certain extent. Based on the aforementioned findings, it was suggested to popularize the planting model of navel orange intercropping daylily hedgerow and alfalfa intercropping hedgerows in slope farmland in the Three Gorges Reservoir area.
