Objective The study aimed to investigate the soil nutrient properties in different distribution areas of the extremely small population plant Euryodendron excelsum Hung T.Chang and explore the effect of soil nutrient properties on the DBH of E.excelsum,to provide scientific basis for its protection and sustainable management. Method The E. excelsum populations from natural distribution area (Bajia town (BJ),Sanjia town (SJ) ) and cultivation distribution area (Yangchun Forestry Science Research Institute (LKS),E’huangzhang Provincial Nature Reserve (EHZ) ) were taken as the research object. The nutrients content of these soil samples at the depth of 0-50 cm collected from 4 distribution areas were determined. The independent chemical index with higher load value was selected and included in the minimum data set for soil fertility evaluation by principal component analysis and Pearson correlation analysis. All indices were normalized by membership functions and then used to calculate the soil quality indexes (SQI).The effects of SQI, jamming intensity, slope, altitude and slope position on the DBH of E.excelsum were evaluated by the generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). Result No significant difference was observed in pH among different distribution areas of E.excelsum.However,significant difference was observed in organic matter, total nitrogen, total potassium,alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen, available phosphorus, available potassium, available iron, available copper and exchangeable manganese among different distribution areas of E.excelsum.7 chemical indexes (i.e.,pH,total nitrogen, total potassium,alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen, available phosphorus, available copper and exchangeable manganese) was selected from total data set composed of 13 chemical indexes,to form the minimum data set.The order of SQIs calculated by minimum data set among different distribution areas of E. excelsum was as follows:EHZ(0.37)=LKS(0.37)<BJ(0.39)<SJ(0.41),with no significant differences among these SQIs.The soil nutrient status in distribution areas of E.excelsum was poor. The contents of total phosphorus, available boron and exchangeable manganese in the soil were low. Moreover, the contents of soil organic matter, total nitrogen and alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen in cultivation distribution area of E.excelsum were relatively low, which were lower than those of natural distribution area.Compared to jamming intensity, slope, altitude and slope position, the SQI based on the minimum data set was the key factors influencing the DBH distribution of E. excelsum population at this stage. Conclusion The growth and spatial distribution of extremely small population plant E.excelsum were limited by soil nutrient status.
