Objective This study aimed to study the characteristics and spatiotemporal dynamics of desertification in the the northern foot of the Yinshan Mountains, and its influence on soil grain size, providing a scientific basis for land desertification control and ecological restoration in the northern foot of Yinshan Mountains. Method In the northern foot of Yinshan Mountains in Inner Mongolia, based on the Landsat remote sensing image features and 290 soil samples, spatiotemporal distribution and change trends of land desertification from 2000 to 2024 were studied, and the particle size characteristics and fractal characteristics of surface soil particles in areas with different desertification degrees were also analyzed. Result From 2000 to 2024,the degree of desertification of desert grassland in the northern foot of Yinshan Mountains was divided into five levels:non-desertified,mild,moderate,severe and extremely severe.Over this period, the degree of desertification generally showed a downward trend, with significantly higher levels in the northwest compared to the southeast. The desertified area showed a decreasing trend,in which the non-desertified and severe desertified area changed greatly. The surface soil of desert grassland was dominated by fine sand, which accounted for 24.78% to 41.08% in the surface soil under different degrees of desertification. The particle sizes of wind-erodible soil were 0.08-0.1 and 0.7-1 mm respectively. The average particle sizes of soil particles under non-desertified, mild, moderate, severe and extremely severe desertification were 0.18,0.24,0.28,0.42,and 0.97 mm,and the mean fractal dimensions were 2.82,2.73,2.74,2.70 and 2.52,respectively.A significant negative correlation existed between fractal dimension and desertification index (R2=0.748),indicating that the smaller the fractal dimension, the worse the surface desertification. Conclusion Parameters including soil particle size and fractal dimension all showed that the desertification degree of desert grassland at the northern foot of Yinshan Mountains has been alleviated, but the wind erosion particles of surface soil tend to be coarse-grained.
