Abstract

Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is one of the most common conditions affecting pregnant women during early pregnancy. If not effectively treated, HG can lead to complications such as malnutrition, gastrointestinal damage, electrolyte imbalance, positive urine ketones, ketoacidosis, and in severe cases, neurological damage that may result in Wernicke's encephalopathy, posing a serious threat to maternal life. HG may also adversely affect fetal development, potentially causing growth restriction, low birth weight, and preterm birth. The etiology of HG remains unclear, but it is believed to be associated with multiple factors including genetics, endocrine changes, and infections. In recent years, scholars have conducted extensive research on current treatment protocols, management strategies, etiological mechanisms, and the impact of HG on both mother and fetus. This paper reviews recent research findings on these aspects of HG.
