For the steep Yarlung Zangbo River Valley, site observations and the mesoscale weather research and forecasting model (WRF) were used to investigate the month-long variations in surface wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and pressure. The profiles and horizontal distributions of meteorological parameters were analyzed. The impacts of three reanalysis datasets—ERA5, ERA-Interim, and FNL—on the precision of wind simulation were discussed. The variation trends of wind speed were effectively predicted using each of the reanalysis datasets. The ERA5 case had the best correlation and the smallest error coefficients to the observation wind speed. The ERA5 case effectively captured the diurnal change of wind speed and can predict the time and magnitude of strong winds. Due to the thermal and terrain effects, the valley wind pattern is significant. Strong winds and neutral air conditions were observed around sunsets, while weak winds and stable air stratifications occurred around sunrises. The wind direction was more constrained by topography in typical valley winds. Large-scale severe convective weather events, however, reduced the correlation between wind direction and topography.
