As the basic topological unit of the converter device, the single-phase voltage-type PWM rectifier plays a crucial role in suppressing the starting inrush current. The traditional approximate solution has significant errors in the design of current-limiting resistors due to the neglect of the transient process and the influence of the initial phase angle of the power supply voltage. For this purpose, this paper establishes a per-unit value model of the starting current considering the transient process, and analyzes the coupling influence of the undamped natural oscillation frequency () and the damping rate () on the maximum starting current within the variation range of the initial phase angle . By defining the relative error between the peak starting current and its steady-state amplitude, the partition map of it varying with and is drawn for the first time. Based on this, a hierarchical design strategy for current-limiting resistors is proposed: according to the positions of (,) in the figure, an approximate solution is adopted in the applicable area; in risk areas and redundant areas, numerical iterative algorithms can be initiated. Safety criteria design and multi-objective optimization design can be adopted respectively. The former ensures current constraints, while the latter takes into account both rapidity and smoothness. Simulation shows that the approximate solution error is less than 1.5% within the applicable area; in the risk area and the redundant area, the approximate solution leads to a significant deviation in the current peak (the error of the calculation example reaches 565.98% or 40.97%), while the results of the design based on the safety criterion and the multi-objective optimization design can both reduce the error to within 1.2%. Finally, the E series standard resistors with tolerances of ±1%, ±5%, and ±10% are used for adaptation analysis, which proved that this strategy could achieve precise design and reliable selection of current-limiting resistors, providing a systematic design basis for such engineering problems.
