To explore oxide nanomaterials exhibiting high photocatalytic and gas-sensing performance, two interface-tuning strategies for ZnO were attempted. First, surfactant (PVP) was utilized in an enhanced solvothermal method to control the size and dispersion of Ag NPs. Second, leveraging the seed-mediating effect of dispersed doped Ag⁺, co-modification of ZnO was achieved through the interaction between doped Ag⁺ and deposited Ag NPs. Concurrently, the impact of interface regulation on microstructure, optical properties, photocatalytic activity, and gas sensing performance was investigated. Experimental results demonstrated that the ZnO-Ag nanocomposites synthesized via the two strategies exhibited outstanding photocatalytic activity (degrading all pollutants within 50 minutes) and gas sensing capabilities (100 ppm NH₃ response values reaching 4.2 and 2.6 times higher than pure ZnO, respectively). Analysis suggested that, beyond the incorporation of submicron Ag NPs, the superior performance of ZnO-Ag was further attributed to abundant oxygen vacancy defects and impurity levels generated by Ag⁺ doping. These elements enhanced the trapping of photo-generated electrons, thereby improving electron-hole separation efficiency. This provided a reference for further research on noble metal-modified metal oxides.
