激活与重建:甘肃简牍博物馆的媒介化与城市传播
Activation and Reconstruction:The Mediation and Urban Communication of Gansu Jiandu Museum
Against the backdrop of digital technologies profoundly reshaping the form of cultural communication, the mediatization of museums has been accelerating significantly. The role of museums is gradually shifting from traditional institutions for cultural relics collection and exhibition to spatial media that connect history with the present,as well as physical relics with their cultural significance. The new building of Gansu Jiandu Museum (hereinafter referred to as “the New Museum”) officially opened in September 2023. Its core collection of bamboo and wooden slips holds extremely high historical value, yet it also faces the challenges such as the monotonous material of the slips and the high threshold for text recognition, making effective public engagement difficult.Taking this museum as a case study, this paper focuses on the core issue of how museums can leverage digital technologies to activate traditional culture, participate in urban spatial production, and enhance urban “communicability”. It aims to provide theoretical references and practical paths for the digital transformation of cultural and museum institutions and urban cultural communication. This study adopts a case analysis method, integrating theoretical perspectives from museology and communication studies, and conducts its argument from two dimensions: mediatization practice and spatial reconstruction. In terms of mediatization practice, the New Museum has systematically promoting the transformation of cultural relics and narrative reconstruction by constructing a trinitarian digital interpretation system of “material-information-meaning”.Specifically,it uses technologies such as 3D scanning, interactive screens, and VR virtual scenes to convert static bamboo and wooden slips into perceptible and interactive dynamic media. At the content production level, relying on digital narrative strategies, the New Museum reconstructs the historical context through contextualized and story-telling exhibition methods. In terms of urban communication practice, this study analyzes how museums expand urban communicability from the perspectives of virtual-physical integration and participatory communication.By virtue of the geographical advantage of Matan Cultural Island, the New Museum conveys the cultural connotation of “preserving classics through Jian (bamboo slips) and carrying the way through Du (wooden slips)” through architectural language. It has built a virtual-physical interwoven communication network through online mini-programs,VR exhibition halls, social media, and other channels, significantly expanding the coverage of cultural dissemination. At the same time, the New Museum promotes citizen participation through social education activities, forming temporary communities and interaction ritual chains, and thus enhancing urban cultural identity and social connections. The research shows that digital technology has significantly enhanced the communicability of bamboo and wooden slip culture, positioning museums as a key node of urban communication that connect the physical and virtual, as well as the past and the present. However, potential risks in the application of technology must also be acknowledged. On the one hand, digital narratives cannot replace the intrinsic value of cultural relics, and must be based on solid academic research to avoid the dissipation of cultural aura caused by “technology-supremacy”.On the other hand, digital interfaces may exacerbate the digital divide, creating new communication barriers for digitally disadvantaged groups such as the elderly. Therefore, museums should adhere to a culture-centric approach in the digital transformation process, ensuring the fairness and sustainability of communication through inclusive design and multi-channel services.
