The safety braking model describes the calculation method of the minimum braking distance of a train after applying a braking command, which is the theoretical basis for the train protection system to realize automatic train overspeed protection. The minimum braking distance is equal to the sum of the idle running distance and the effective braking distance, where the idle running distance depends on the idle running time, and the effective braking distance depends on the braking force. The traction specification standards for heavy-haul trains describe the calculation methods of the idle running time and the braking force of full exhaust braking under constant pressure but lack the description of scenarios under inconstant pressure. The calculation methods of the idle running time and the braking force of full exhaust braking under constant pressure and inconstant pressure were studied, and air braking tests were conducted on real trains. The correctness of the methods was verified, which provided a reliable theoretical basis for formulating the ATP protection scheme for heavy-haul railways.
