Abstract

Matrix metallopeptidase 3 (MMP‑3) has a wide range of biological functions in the central nervous system (CNS), particularly playing a key role in injury repair and the development of neuropathological diseases. MMP‑3 promotes axonal and myelin regeneration by degrading extracellular matrix (ECM) components and inhibiting nerve regeneration inhibitors. Additionally, MMP‑3 regulates blood‑brain barrier (BBB) permeability and modulates neuroinflammation, contributing to the pathological processes of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Notably, abnormal MMP‑3 expression is closely related to the invasiveness and malignancy of brain tumors. This review summarizes the mechanisms by which MMP‑3 operates in these CNS diseases and discusses its potential as a therapeutic target. Future research should focus on in‑depth analysis of the molecular regulatory mechanisms of MMP‑3 to advance the development of targeted therapeutic strategies and improve treatment outcomes for related diseases.
