As a major cradle of traditional craftsmanship, the Yangtze River Economic Belt has seen its rich intangible cultural heritage (ICH) practices gain renewed opportunities for dissemination and development through short video platforms amid ongoing urbanisation and digital transformation. Focusing on the visual and auditory content characteristics of short videos featuring traditional craftsmanship ICH in the Yangtze River basin, this study developed a narrative extraction framework that integrates automated quantitative analysis with manual coding, and systematically investigateed how audiovisual narrative elements shape user interaction behaviours. The results are shown as follows. 1) visual complexity exerted a significant inhibitory effect on user engagement behaviors. 2) auditory elements with clearly identifiable musical attributes significantly enhanced user participation. 3) visual and auditory elements exhibited a complementary effect in shaping user engagement behaviors. The findings theoretically extend the quantitative analytical framework of audiovisual narrative elements in the digital dissemination of intangible cultural heritage, and empirically provide evidence for optimizing digital communication strategies and modes of cultural expression for intangible cultural heritage in the Yangtze River region.
