摘要

Bamboo is one of the plants adored by the Chinese people. All growing periods of bamboo from shoots to groves and to maturity, its shadow in the sunshine and moonlight, and its form and appearance under the weathers of wind, rain, thunder and snow, have been extolled and portrayed by poets and painters. The biological characters of bamboo, such as the nodes, empty center and cold resistant are connected to human personalities and moralities respectively implying polite, modest and fairness. And there are also many legends and allusions about bamboo, like the mottled bamboo in connection with Xiang Concubine, the Moso bamboo referring to Meng Zong's filial piety to his mother, green plums and a bamboo horse for a friendship formed in childhood, and bamboo's connection to a well-thought-out plan. Thus the profound spiritual symbol and cultural and humanist connotations arise.
